1,000 gallstones in techie’s abdomen – highest number of stones removed from a patient’s body.
A 32-year-old techie suffering from severe pain in his abdomen was found to have more than 1,000 gallstones -- hardened deposits within the fluid in the gallbladder-- in his body. Doctors suspect a sedentary lifestyle and a hectic work schedule could have been led to the growth of the stones.
Dr Kumar Parth, Chief Surgical Gastroenterologist, Sagar Hospital, Kumarswamy Layout, said the stones had blocked the bile duct. “If the gallstones were not removed from bile duct, it could have resulted in jaundice, acute polycystic disease, and maybe a rupture of the gallbladder. First, we did an endoscopy and removed the stone that was stuck in the bile duct. The next day, the patient had to undergo a surgery for 2.5 hours so that we could remove all the stones.” This is the highest number of stones we have removed from a patient’s body,” he added.
