What are the causes of Breast Lumps?

There are several possible causes for breast lumps. Some of them are:

  • Cysts or sacs filled with fluid
  • Fibrocystic breasts characterised by lumpy breast tissue and sometimes accompanied by pain
  • Sacs filled with milk known as milk cysts that are common during breast-feeding
  • Non-cancerous tumours in the milk ducts known as intraductal papilloma
  • Non-cancerous rubbery lumps known as fibroadenoma
  • Mastitis, which is an infection of the breast
  • Benign tumour-like growths called hamartoma
  • Non-cancerous fatty lumps called lipoma
  • Breast cancer
  • Injury
